The festival was initiated in 1974 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The International Festival of the Circus of Monte Carlo became the most important and prestigious circus festival in the world.
The many television broadcastings of this spectacle gave the festival a great reputation. Its "Golden Clown" is regarded as the supreme award by all the artists of this discipline.
It is unknown which Polish group or artist joined the 1977 festival. The Polish contribution to the festival didn't gain an award.

The "Golden Clown" was awarded to the Knie Family,
a great horse show by the National Swiss Circus Knie.
